Tree Roots Can Damage Your property: Tony Hands, Hands-on Tree Care.
When tree roots get too close to walls or building foundations they can cause some serious damage. We were recently called out to a house in Burngreave, Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Two large Conifers planted in the back garden had become too close to the neighbouring roof.
Tree Roots Damaging Property
In this case, the Mature Roots were pushing against a retaining wall which created a terrace in the garden. The trees had such an impact that they had created instability in the wall. Luckily our client owned the wall but it can be much more serious if the tree is damaging your neighbour’s property.
In this instance, the customer also requested the purpose of removing the entire tree as it created a lot of shade in the garden. The trees required removal lowering off in sections due to the risk of timber damage downslope to prevent damage to property.
Neighbours Tree Roots Damaging My Property
If on the other hand, a neighbour’s tree is damaging your property, you can take some basic action yourself.
Abatement (or self-help) is your right to cut back the encroaching roots to the boundary line.
You don’t need your neighbour’s consent to do this, but it would be recommended, for the sake of maintaining good relationships. Also, it’s worthwhile talking to us… to just get some advice because if you cut the tree yourself, it shouldn’t be so harsh that it destabilises or kills the trees.
In this case, we were able to remove the problem by removing the trees. The stumps were then drilled and treated with poison to ensure that they rot away over time. Having the stumps removed by grinding is also an option.
