Hands on Tree Care have remained busy since the end of 2020. 2021 has arrived and we just keep rolling and there’s nothing we like better than a bit of repeat business. So we were delighted to return to the home of a previous customer to carry out the Re-pollarding of their poplar tree at Bradway, Sheffield.
Pollarding a Poplar Tree
We originally carried out a pollarding on this tree 6 years ago, and it was really ready for a refresh.
Pollarding is done routinely on Poplar trees to maintain shape. Removing the upper branches promotes the development of a dense canopy, it can also prolong the life of the tree as it also reduces the weight of the canopy. In addition, reducing the risk of large boughs becoming weak and breaking, which obviously could be a danger to both people and property.

- Reduced risk of falling boughs and branches
- Lets in more light to gardens
- Encourages the growth of smaller plants living in the shade of the tree

Although pollarding can look severe, it isn’t actually. The trees will start to bud again within a few months and suddenly you will see the tree spring back into life. It’s actually quite beautiful and dramatic.
